About the Role

Volunteer Engagement Vertical Lead is the person responsible for managing and leading the team or efforts that involve working with volunteers—making sure they are engaged, motivated, and involved in the organisation’s work. This role is essential in ensuring that volunteers feel valued, connected, and productive, as they contribute their time and skills toward the organisation’s mission. The Volunteer Engagement Lead helps create a positive experience for volunteers, fostering a supportive community and retaining committed individuals.

Requirements

Key responsibilities:

1. Volunteer Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Recruitment Strategy: Develop and implement a strategy to attract diverse volunteers from various backgrounds and skill sets, tailoring recruitment approaches to meet the organisation’s needs.

  • Screening and Interviewing: Conduct interviews, background checks, and skill assessments to match volunteers with suitable roles.

  • Onboarding: Create an engaging onboarding process that introduces volunteers to the organisation’s mission, values, and operations, ensuring they feel prepared and confident in their roles.


    2. Training and Development

  • Role-Specific Training: Develop and deliver training programs to equip volunteers with the necessary skills and knowledge for their roles.

  • Professional Development: Provide ongoing training opportunities, workshops, or certifications that help volunteers grow their skills and keep them motivated.

  • Mentorship Programs: Pair new volunteers with experienced mentors to build relationships and provide guidance, fostering a supportive community.


    3. Volunteer Engagement and Retention

  • Community Building: Organise social events, networking opportunities, and team-building activities to help volunteers connect with each other and build a sense of community.

  • Recognition and Appreciation: Implement recognition programs, such as awards, appreciation events, or personalised thank-you notes, to celebrate volunteer contributions and milestones.

  • Feedback and Communication: Regularly gather feedback through surveys or check-ins, encouraging volunteers to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas for improvement.


    4. Volunteer Program Management

  • Scheduling and Coordination: Develop efficient schedules, manage volunteer availability, and coordinate shifts to ensure smooth operations across events and programs.

  • Resource Allocation: Ensure volunteers have the resources they need to succeed, such as training materials, equipment, and a clear understanding of their responsibilities.

  • Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain records of volunteer hours, achievements, training certifications, and evaluations, using volunteer management software to keep information organised.


    5. Performance Monitoring and Program Evaluation

  • Goal Setting and Performance Evaluation: Set clear expectations for volunteer roles and periodically evaluate performance, providing constructive feedback to help volunteers grow.

  • Program Metrics and Reporting: Track volunteer engagement metrics, retention rates, and satisfaction levels to evaluate program success and make data-driven improvements.

  • Impact Reporting: Showcase the impact of volunteer contributions through reports or presentations that demonstrate how their work directly supports the organisation’s mission.


  • 6. Skills Required

  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills: The ability to connect with people from all walks of life, showing empathy, patience, and strong listening skills.

  • Organisational Skills: Efficiently manage schedules, coordinate shifts, and keep accurate records to ensure smooth volunteer operations.

  • Leadership and Motivation: The ability to inspire volunteers, providing guidance and motivation while building a positive team culture.

    Problem-Solving: Address challenges, from scheduling conflicts to volunteer grievances, with a calm and proactive approach.
